The core tax framework is the same for EVs as for petrol and diesel cars: customs assesses the vehicle's Open Market Value (OMV), and Excise Duty, GST and the Additional Registration Fee (ARF) all flow from there. Our COE and ARF guide explains these components in detail.

What differs is the incentives. Under Singapore's Vehicle Emissions Scheme (VES), vehicles in the cleanest emission bands earn a rebate against the ARF — and electric vehicles typically sit in the cleanest band. The band values are revised from time to time, so confirm the current VES rebates before budgeting. There was also an additional early-adoption EV incentive in previous years; check whether it still applies at the time of your import.

COE category is also worth checking early. As a general guide, lower-powered EVs fall under Category A while higher-output models fall under Category B — and because the power output of electric motors differs from petrol engines, two versions of the same nameplate can land in different categories. This affects both your COE premium expectations and long-term ownership costs.

Road Tax for Electric Vehicles

EV road tax is based on the vehicle's power output rather than engine capacity. Charging and Everyday Practicality

Before importing, think about how the car will actually be charged. Home charging with a wallbox is the most convenient option for landed-property owners, while apartment dwellers should check what their condominium or HDB car park offers. The public charging network in Singapore continues to expand, but charger availability and speed vary by location.

Also confirm the vehicle's charging connector type and whether any adapters are needed for local chargers. These are small details that become daily inconveniences if overlooked.
